Galerie Paris
Finished

Artists

Miyako Ishiuchi, Aki Inomata, Mari Katayama, Yumiko Sugano, Mari Terashima et al.
A “super girls” movement of women artists in their 20s emerged in mid-1980s, before the Equal Employment Act was passed. Still today the contemporary art world is thought to be mainly female, with women making up 80% of Japanese art school student bodies. Even with such examples of progress toward a more open world, though, society is in many ways growing more rigidly conservative. What does it mean to be a “super girl” today? Works by several female artists demonstrating the ability to surpass their difficulties are on display.
