Picturing Landscapes

Hara Museum ARC
Finished

Artists

Okyo Maruyama, Kokan Shiba, Kumi Sugai, Hiroshi Sugimoto, Noe Aoki et al.
Ancient Japanese landscape paintings often depicted Chinese scenery, but there is also a long tradition of native landscapes in Japanese art. Many of these paintings joined image with verse, portraying famous places mentioned in well-known lines of poetry. Interest in realistic landscape painting heightened from the mid-Edo period, spurred in part by the influence of new culture from China and the West.

Along with works of contemporary art, this exhibition presents traditional paintings of famous sites and Edo-period landscapes incorporating the new perspectives, techniques, and materials of the time. Enjoy a multi-faceted look at one part of the story of how expressions in landscape art became more diverse.
