Transience is one of the aesthetic sensibilities that Japanese people have cultivated since the middle ages. While those in the West seek the “eternal” and find beauty therein, it is often said that most Japanese experience beauty in things that are transient and ephemeral. This exhibition, “The Transience” is named after the modernity, skill and tradition of Japan seen through calligraphy, and investigates the possibility of calligraphy and the future of Japanese culture. This exhibit consciously utilizes white space and emptiness, in itself a return to traditional Japanese formal considerations, and is an exploration of the way emptiness generates rhythm, dialogue with space, and harmony with nature through a process of continual change. This exhibit provides a new-found opportunity to consider of calligraphy in the present and to learn about our culture and traditions anew.
