In January 1960, Ken Domon’s “The Children of Chikuho”, a masterpiece of postwar photo-reportage, was released by the publisher Patoria Shoten. This affordable photobook with monochrome photographs printed on rough paper straightforwardly conveyed the sadness of daily life in the desolate coal-mining region of Kyushu, and provoked a nationwide emotion. The face of the Japanese having lived through the hardships of this critical period is also vividly portrayed in film. The present screening, while looking back at the social situation then as seen through documentary film, also focuses on the traditional crafts which were preserved throughout this difficult era.
