Museum of Modern Art, Gunma
Finished

Artists

Sonoko Sasaki
Having studied various techniques of hand weaving in Shizuoka, Sonoko Sasaki(b. 1939, Tokyo) was selected to present her work in the Japan Kogei Association’s annual exhibition in 1971. Following this she further studied techniques in Totori and Shimane, coming to incorporate natural motifs of birds and flowers, stars and moons into the patterns of her fabrics dyed with various plant extracts. Having evolved her unique style she went on to enjoy a string of successful exhibitions winning various awards and gaining recognition at each stage of the progression of her practice. This exhibition provides a rare opportunity to catch a full overview of her career which has spanned nearly 50 years, with delicately woven features of birds and plants, along with kimono and obis created from subtlety dyed fabrics which seem to shift with the wind and light.
