Macau’s Azulejos Ceramic Tiles and Stone Pavement Originating in Portugal

LIXIL Gallery 1 & 2
Finished
Macau, whose historic city center is a designated World Heritage Site, is working to revitalize its nostalgic old Chinese townscapes and, along with them, its legacy of Portuguese cultural influences dating from the Age of Sail. A form of ceramic tilework called “Azulejo” and stone pavement called “calcada” have become symbolic of this endeavor. Such detailing that reflects the history and spirit of Macau imparts an exotic, old-world charm to Macau’s streets. This exhibition will convey Macau’s old-world atmosphere through photographs and video recently taken in Macau and exhibits of actual Azulejo tiles.
