Mika Kusakari
Following on from the success of her “Uneven Painting” held at TAV Gallery last year, Mika Kusakari returns with a development of her series seeking the gap between one, two and three dimensions within the frame of painting. Key works include “Autograph” which consists of 24 combined pieces (500×500mm, each) and “Homage” made up of 16 individual pieces (500×500mm, each). Kusakari, who defines herself as a “sekai-kei”(world type) artist, believes in a direct connection between the inner life of her work and the world outside. In this way Kusakari identifies various overlaps with “Barusu,” the spell to end the world in the famous Japanimation “Laputa.” In particular her large scale works made up of combined canvases allow for a division of time and dissection of the whole, with the possible sale of each individual piece leaving a certain crashing sensation. At the same time the dynamic coexistence of color, lines and material draws a further tension in the approach to “Barusu”.
