Artists

Mari Kawai
There is something curious about Mari Kawai’s paintings— they seem to depict motifs everyone is familiar with, yet something is off. The natural appears artificial due to fluorescent colors and planes existing somewhere between painting and sculpture, and subjects placed in the center of the picture yet not attached to the ground suggest the lightness of floating in space. Furthermore, Kawai’s works offer no real clues as to how they should be interpreted. Shapes appear starkly against backgrounds of similar colors and nearly complementary colors produce the effect of forms jumping out boldly at the eye. Overlapping broken lines further enhance the strong presence of the works.
