Hirotoshi Ito
Hirotoshi Ito creates unbelievable stone works that have won him international acclaim while also running his family’s stonemason business. Incorporating different elements into natural stone, his sculptures look sometimes soft, sometimes liquid, and sometimes cloth-like. “Tight-Lipped Guys,” one of his most famous pieces, features an open zipper exposing a set of teeth that turns the stone convincingly into a living, grinning creature. Ito’s startling skill and wonderful artistry draw out the physical properties of the stone in ways that demonstrate the delightful richness of its expressions.
