Artists

Lars Müller
100 books convey an impression of the themes and formal concerns that shape the world of the Swiss publisher and designer Lars Müller. Since 1983, he has been presenting books on architecture, design, typography, photography, and social issues that impress with their consistently high design quality. Müller is selective in his choice of content and equally stringent in his search for the appropriate form and materials for its presentation. He sets limits that reveal his own creative convictions as a designer while also expressing his rootedness in the tradition of modern Swiss graphic design. The 100 books are arranged in the exhibition according to thematic and formal criteria. Visitors have a chance to both see and touch them and hence to participate in a debate on where the book stands in today’s changing media world. For Lars Müller, one thing is clear: There is no digital replacement in sight for the book and its comforting physicality, its formal variety, and the sensuality of its perception. Thus, the book well deserves our continued attention and the confidence placed in it by the best designers and thinkers in all cultures.
