What is the best way to preserve and pass on traditional architectural skills? This exhibition presents real-life examples of such techniques used in the construction and preservation of “machiya” townhouses in the ancient castle town of Kanazawa. On display are tools and materials used by machiya carpenters, stone masons, plasters, makers of kawara roof tiles and tatami mats, fixture artisans, and picture mounters. Visitors can also enjoy interviews with these craftsmen, reports on progress in their restoration projects, and video featuring their work.
