In the 1970s, “things” emerged as a keyword in the Japanese photography world. The photographer Takuma Nakahira, who had begun to express his dissatisfaction with existing photographic aesthetics in the late ’60s, grew critical of the so-called “rough, blurred, and out of focus” method he had used up until that point. Changing tact, Nakahira adopted an approach that recalled an “illustrated botanical dictionary,” and marked a return to the documentary nature of the medium. In the process of making this switch, Nakahira repeatedly focused on the relationship between things and photography. Here, the word “things” refers to the tangible state of the world that appears beyond the camera lens. Considering things in this way raises questions about the photographer’s role in confronting the world, prompting, in other words, a fundamental reexamination of the relational structure between the human being as subject and the world as object. The development of this idea also has certain contextual parallels with the issues that Mono-ha and other artists of the era faced. While centering upon the stance of Nakahira this exhibition also brings focus to the work of Kiyoji Ohtsuji who also brought a unique perspective upon the relations between objects and photography, while also supplementing this with art work from the same period.
