Shigeru Ban

One the key characteristics of architect Shigeru Ban is his ability to utilize everyday familiar materials, such as paper tubes and forge them into unique structures and building processes. From “Paper House” (1995) to “Japan Pavilion at Expo 2000 in Hannover”, he has worked widely from individual residential buildings, to large scale public constructions. He has also continued in his support for areas affected by earthquake, utilizing his knowledge and skills to improve conditions for people through such projects as the “Paper Church” (1995) built from paper tubes in response to the Hanshin Earthquake, the temporary housing facility “Paper Log House” (1995) and the “Evacuation Center Dividing System” (2011). With the collapse of the cathedral in Christchurch, New Zealand as a result of the earthquake he also devised the “Paper Cathedral” (2013), and has supported disaster affected regions around the world. This particular exhibition presents Ban’s concern for private living in the event of natural disaster.
