The Gifts of French Painting— Treasured Masterpieces

Sen-Oku Hakukokan Museum Tokyo
Finished

Artists

Claude Monet, Jean François Millet, Paul Signac, Jean Jacques Henner et al.
The Sumitomo Family, which founded what is now the Sumitomo Group in the Meiji era, was also deeply involved in arts and culture. The Sumitomo companies displayed works of art in their offices, adding color to the business world, yet the many of pieces collected by the firms are still not well known by the general public.

The Sen-Oku Hakuoku Kan, a highlight of the Sumitomo Group’s cultural achievements, launched a series introducing the paintings of the Sumitomo Collection last year. “Flowers” was followed by “Famed Japanese Artists and their Meeting with Paris,” and thanks to the popularity of the series, the museum now presents a third exhibition featuring artists who have written their names in the annals of modern French painting. This special public exhibition features some forty masterpieces of French painting everyone should know. Artists include Millet of the Barbizon school, Impressionists such as Monet and Manet, the Neo-Impressionist Signac, the major Fauvist Vlaminck, and Chagall and other Ecole de Paris artists.
