Jio Shimizu
Jio Shimizu’s work as an artist is rooted in the idea of positivism, in which he explores the relationships between art and natural science and the birth of motion and the elements. He carries out this approach by utilizing existing elements in the physical world such as sound, light, and vibration, as well as the physical phenomena they cause to our perception.
“Landscape,” Shimizu’s second solo exhibition at Misa Shin Gallery, presents pictures of elements sampled from places within the gallery such as its floor, walls, and office space. These images are magnified by a hundred to over a thousand times to reveal their various elements.
Unlike optical microscopes, electron microscopes work by projecting electrons onto their subjects, allowing the viewer to observe objects at a scale of electrons (less than 1 nm), far smaller than the human eye’s observable limit of the shortest light waves (400 nm/ purple). In addition, there is no optical focal point (focus), and objects with a significant field of depth appear very large despite being less than 1 mm in size, creating the illusion of a “landscape.” Monotone images taken in a vacuum with intense electron beams conjure images reminiscent of inhabitable “spaces,” “lifeless views” and “death.” The installation“Landscape” incorporates monitors and an ultrasound speaker. By featuring what cannot usually be seen or perceived, it renews our understanding of events by offering an experience unique in itself.
