There is a saying which originates from ancient Greece which states “Painting is silent poetry and poetry is painting that speaks”. Modern western style painting in Japanese art was much influenced by the modern movement in art to become independent from the world of literature. With the rise of Impressionism a whole wave of new expressions came to emerge in the art world thereafter. Yet many works maintained a poetic sensibility which one might say is rooted in the literary field. In recent years there have been a new flow of artists who have been actively incorporating poetry into their works and this exhibition examines this tide from modern times, both from poetry to painting and painting to poetry.
