This event has ended.

Since her 2009 solo exhibition, Tomoko Konoike has participated in several group shows in Japan and abroad, held her first overseas solo show in San Francisco, and created multiple works of public art. She was awarded the Nikkei Nihonga Grand Prize in 2013, and is involved in ongoing art projects in Akita Prefecture. Konoike continually opens up new possibilities by creating fresh perspectives.

Human existence within the wonder of nature has been a theme of Konoike’s work since the March, 2011 earthquake. Endeavors such as “Myths Open Tohoku” and “Art Museum Lodge Project” (started in Akita Prefecture in 2012), as well as the recent “Storytelling Table Runners,” can only be described in terms of geographical forms, environments, and human energy. By discovering what could only exist in a certain place, Konoike’s region-specific activities tap into the life force of these locations, shaking the foundations of how we view and respond emotionally to art. This approach surely has implications for humans and nature alike. This exhibition transcends the usual framework of a show for a single artist, asking visitors to recreate a story with her and her works, and through this act of creation seek out the future existence for human beings.
