The University Art Museum - Tokyo University of the Arts
Finished

Artists

Yuichi Takahashi, Kyousai Kawanabe, Taikan Yokoyama, Seiki Kuroda et al.
Through the combined collections of the Boston Museum and that of Tokyo University of the Arts this exhibition re-examines the mutual impact of between Japan and the West in the late 19th century. After re-opening the country Japan encountered the “Western Impact” and entered the steady path towards modernization. At the same time Western visitors to Japan were much in awe of its art and culture. While there is much documentation on how Japan was influenced by the West the opposite affect has only been spoken of in terms of Japonism. This exhibition attempts to more accurately reflect the mutual interplay between these cultures and their wider repricussions.
