Sputniko!
From a robot which can communicate with crows, to a moon rover in high heels, and even a machine which emulates menstruation Sputniko! is an artist who continues to reflect upon the impact of technology upon society and individual human life through video, music, photography and performance. On this occasion she joins forces with Gucci’s Flora perfume in the production of a new body of work.
Japan has a history of incorporating motifs of nature into kimono prints which dates back to 1200 and with the influence of other cultures and ways of seeing the world the patterns and colors have come to evolve over the centuries. In recent years, with the aid of biotechnology it has become possible to create such wonders as blue roses and blue carnations, flowers which never existed before. In 2008 the Applied Crop Genomics Research Center applied the DNA of jellyfish and that of coral, to create “fluorescent silk”. Through a collaboration with this research center Sputniko! has come to develop the project “Tranceflora”, utilizing rose smelling silk, aphrodisiac silk and fluorescent silk in installations of fashion, short films and photography while calling into question the cultural significance of a transformed nature.
