Amulets

Bunka Gakuen Costume Museum
Finished
Clothes do not just help us regulate body temperature, they have also been used to protect our wellbeing. Before the advance of science, people believed certain patterns, colors, and materials could ward off the invisible evils threatening life and preserve sacredness. Embroidery, beads, and accessories serving as talismans were placed around the openings of clothing to keep evil spirits from coming in, on backs where one’s eyes cannot see, and on body parts considered important to human life and functioning, such as the ears and forehead. This exhibition introduces the diverse roles played by amulets on folk costumes, with a focus on pieces from Asia and Africa.
