Kosai Hori
Artist’s statement: I began traveling across the region stricken by the Great East Japan Earthquake about a month after the disaster. Looking beyond the wreckage of the Miyagi Prefecture town of Yuriage, I saw a peaceful sea stretching out on the horizon. It seemed impossible that that this very sea had claimed so many lives and homes.
I have been painting words since my first exhibition in 1971, but after the March, 2011 disaster these words seemed to “detach” from their meanings, becoming merely lines on the page. Drawing originally referred to the act of taking in breath, and like inhaling deeply it marks one’s existence, as if to say “I am alive here, now.” “The Garden of Ruin and Rebirth” focuses on new works but also presents those inspired by my time by the sea in Yuriage in 2011, as well as small drawings from 1979 reflecting my origins as an artist, and damage-inflicted portraits from 1999.
