Laurent Grasso
Maison Hermès presents “Soleil Noir,” the first major exhibition in Japan for the French artist Laurent Grasso. While these works display Grasso’s established style, many feature a uniquely Japanese perspective, as during previous travels to Japan for research, Grasso found inspiration in ancient expressions found in clay figurines, Noh masks, and gold-decorated folding screens.

Sculptures combining images of medieval European monks and Japanese clay figurines are startling in the way they blend Western and Eastern influences without becoming attached to either. Grasso’s works also reference a variety of literary sources, picking up clues from extraordinary happenings in Japan and Edo-period legends. In a new ambition, Grasso has organized the space with his own interpretations of Japanese architectural elements, making the gallery itself an important part of the exhibition.
