Artists

Aki Kondo
Aki Kondo made the bold leap into film as an extension of her painting practice, hoping to accomplish what she could not in painting alone. While her works blend both live action and painted animation, above all she holds fast to her identity as a painter. Her intention has always been to incorporate painted animations in her films.

A major theme of Kondo’s “Hikari” is the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake. Containing a message she wants to convey, this film combines animated oil paintings and live action in a way only Kondo can. Its success in portraying reality while evoking a sense of other otherworldliness stems from the strong and far-reaching impact of the artist’s memories of the disaster.
