Frank Gehry
Fondation Louis Vuitton’s inaugural exhibition, devoted to the architecture of Frank Gehry’s building, achieved strong success in Paris, where it was presented from October 2014 to February 2015 and then again in Beijing, where it was on display over the summer. The exhibition will now move to Tokyo, Japan where it will be shown from 17 October 2015 to 31 January 2016, in the galleries of Louis Vuitton Tokyo. Conceived at the request of Bernard Arnault, in close collaboration with Frank Gehry and his team, the exhibition is an installation in itself. Including drawings from the very beginning of the process to the final stages, the exhibition outlines the architectural realisation of the building that Frank Gehry describes as a “beautiful glass vessel that symbolizes France’s profound cultural vocation”. The exhibition will be a first for the Japanese public. As well as describing the architecture, it will provide a glimpse of the Foundation’s artistic activities through a series of films. Alongside initial sketches, the exhibition brings together a wide selection of original models, created during the project. These are organized in groups, tracing the study of different aspects of the building: inscription on the site, programme analysis, project design, interior space, Iceberg and glass sails. The emphasis is on light and movement; the collection of models evokes a school of fish – a reference that is dear to the architect. The fluidity is emphasised by a spectacular video realised through the use of drones, providing a new perspective of the building. The presentation invites the visitors to immerse themselves in the creative process of the architect who received the prestigious Pritzker Prize in 1989, encouraging them to discover the genesis of this already iconic 21st Century building. Fondation Louis Vuitton’s exhibitions in Beijing and Tokyo form part of its programming beyond its own walls. The “Beyond the Walls” programme will be announced in due course.
