Saya Kubota “Take My Deer to the Dentist”

Harukaito by Island
Finished

Artists

Saya Kubota
Deer, or “shika” in Japanese, have been viewed as objects by people since ancient times. “Shi” means meat and “ka” means fur, i.e., deer have been given the same name as the materials they become after death. Considered pests to this day, they have accepted their destiny to be killed and made into objects by humans for tens of thousands of years.

When you look at the objectified skull of a deer, its molars that once chewed the ground reveal the raising of the earth. Put another way, eroded deer molars reflect a part of the earth’s long history. Seeing deer as living things through their teeth, artist Saya Kubota returns millennia of life to them by wrapping their teeth in the semi-permanent brightness of gold-silver palladium alloy crowns.
