The period in Japan between 1946-1956 was known as the Kasutori era, an era of post-war confusion, in which Hayashi captured the vigorous strength of Japanese citizens, here laid in contrast with the increasing luxury of post-war America in 1955 caught in scenes of New York and Hawaii.
