Seductive Smiles— Masterpieces of Ukiyo-e Painting from the Weston Collection

Ueno Royal Museum
Finished

Artists

Shunsyo Katsukawa, Utamaro Kitagawa, Toyokuni Utagawa, Hokusai Katsushika, Kyosai Kawanabe et al.
Displaying a selection of 129 works from the Weston Collection: paintings by more than fifty artists, including Hishikawa Moronobu, Kitagawa Utamaro, Katsushika Hokusai and Kawanabe Kyōsai. It provides a systematic introduction to the world of Ukiyo-e paintings from the early seventeenth through the late nineteenth century. Many are bijinga, paintings of beautiful women; the result is a bevy of women who have spared no expense on their clothing and hair styles. While enjoying the changes in fashions and in the facial types deemed beautiful, visitors can savor the delicacy and precision possible only in brush-drawn paintings: the hair, depicted in ultra fine strokes, the shading on the eyebrows and lips, the limbs visible through sheer garments.
