Shunga is the name given to a particular genre of ukiyo-e in which humor and sexual explicitness coexist together in the same skillfully rendered image. These works have gained much acclaim internationally, and came under the spotlight again in Japan through the Tokyo National Museum’s exhibition “Shunga: Sex and Pleasure in Japanese Art!” On this occasion over 130 works are brought together from collections around the world, including that of the British Museum, Danish institutions and museums and private collectors of Japan. The exhibition introduces a key overview of the genre through hand-painted works, masterpieces of printmaking, miniature pieces and an easily digestible outline of the history and key features of Shunga.
