Yusuke Asai “Seeds of Imagination, Journeys of Soil”

Hakone Open Air Museum
Finished

Artists

Yusuke Asai
Artist Yusuke Asai paints with familiar materials from our everyday life: In the “Earth Painting” series, he creates murals using mud collected on-site; In “Masking Plant”, a series ongoing since 2003, he first applies masking tape to walls, then draws the shapes of plants and animals over them in pen to create infinitely intricate images.

This exhibition presents works made with the soil of the many places Asai has traveled thus far, as well as earth from Hakone and the grounds of the Hakone Open Air Museum. The first-floor walls display mud murals, including a new publically created work. On the second floor, a new giant piece that combines the “Earth Painting” and “Masking Plant” series fills the space, with masking tape criss-crossing the room in forms reminiscent of “tree roots or an underground nest,” in the words of the artist. This is a rare opportunity to experience Asai’s mythical world of innumerable narratives emerging and growing together.
