Ricarda Roggan
Ricarda Roggan was born in Dresden, former East Germany in 1972, and graduated from Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst Leipzig in 2004. She also studied abroad at the Royal College of Art in 2003. She is one of the most important German photographers today.
In her photographic work, Ricarda Roggan deals with abandoned places, rooms, and marks that people have left behind there. The artist’s photographic series display forests, rock formations, and clouds in a horizonless totality, along with disused furniture and demolished cars. The motifs of her carefully staged pictorial worlds are liberated from contextual ascriptions, and they reveal a quiet magic in the photographic space that directs the gaze to the peculiarities of the things. This exhibition marks the first time in four years in which Ricarda Roggan will present sixteen new works.
In her new series “Apokryphen”, Ricarda Roggan puts the focus on the archived legacies of famous composers, writers and philosophers. She shoots everyday objects, one by one from the same angles, such as glasses and scissors which have been kept in various museums.

This exhibition is composed of four series, “Apokryphen”, “Spot”, “Echo”, and “Bank”. While the viewers appreciate these mysterious works, the following questions will come to mind: Where are they now? Where do the objects come from? What happened to them? At the same time, her works stimulate the deep part of our individual memories. Ricarda Roggan attempts to explain these questions with her classical photographic perspective.
