Artists

Tato Tabuchi
Taro Tabuchi is a ceramic artist born in 1977 who constructed the “Ana-gama” (hole kiln). While many artists choose to use gas and electric kilns because they are easier to control, Tabuchi gathers firewood himself in the mountains and continues to create wood-fired white porcelain.
Variations of fire and ashes from the wood-fired kiln produce unique colors and patterns. Only a part of the soil burnt by the fire from the furnace door turns into a faint cherry blossom color, and the ashes that lie inside create a pattern resembling a transitory sky in spring.
The white porcelain wares of Tabuchi are colored in red, yellow, and purple, making him a heretic among artists with a history of seeking to create ever-whiter porcelain. Meanwhile, pale colors hinting at spring season are clearly reflected in the quietly sophisticated forms of his works. This exhibition presents around 20 vase and objects by Tabuchi.
