The work of Tomohiro Nagahata appears to ignore all context and history of contemporary art, yet it may also be claimed that the worth of art should not merely be determined by such elements. To purely approach artistic creation and the happiness and feeling which is born from this may be said to be a clear appeal of art. As the viewer faces the work of Nagahata and reads its various meanings one may bind this to the discourse and system of contemporary art. But the trigger of Nagahata is the innate surprise which lies in his work, which he uses as a weapon to surpass the bounds of the contemporary art context.
