Known as the “demon of painting” Kyosai Kawanabe built his career through the end of the Edo era and the course of the Meiji period to great popular acclaim, attracting many disciples, including the architect of Mitsubishi Ichigokan Museum, Josiah Conder, who not only left a lasting impact on Japanese modern architecture but also studied painting under Kyosai and actively promoted his masters work overseas. To mark the 5th anniversary of the opening of the Mitsubishi Ichigokan Museum a special exhibition features the achievements of Conder framed amongst the exceptional work of Kyosai Kawanabe.
