The Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923 dispelled the vestiges of Edo, giving rise to the modern city of Tokyo. This new landscape became known for its lively Asakusa area, the cafes and department stores of Chinatown and Ginza, and Shinjuku, which developed as a gateway to the western suburbs with the development of private rail. Through literary works depicting Tokyo during this era such as Yasunori Kawabata’s “The Scarlet Gang of Asakusa,” Kafu Nagai’s “Before and After the Rainy Season,” Yu Ryutanji’s “Shinjuku Sketches,” and Riichi Yokomitsu’s “Spring Garden,” this exhibition vividly lays out the transformations of urban Tokyo while also introducing the character of its suburbs.
