Kyokichi Tanaka + Shizuo Fujimori + Koshiro Onchi “Tsukuhaé”

Tokyo Station Gallery
Finished

Artists

Kyokichi Tanaka, Shizuo Fujimori, Koshiro Onchi
The innovative magazine Tsukuhaé (Moon Reflection) was created in 1914, the same year Tokyo Station opened, through the friendship of three art students in their early twenties: Kyokichi Tanaka, Shizuo Fujimori, and Koshiro Onchi. Leaving a mark on the history of woodblock prints in Japan, the publication brought together a wonderful collection of woodblock prints and poems.

This exhibition features around 300 pieces, including works and materials relating to the meeting of the three students; a limited, private edition of Tsukuhaé produced during the magazine’s preparatory stages; and Sakutaro Hagiwara’s first poetry collection, “Howling at the Moon of Hagiwara,” a compilation of 11 pen drawings by Kyokichi Tanaka and three woodblock prints by Koshiro Onchi, published after Tanaka’s death. There is a focus on the public issues of Tsukuhaé published by Rakuyodo .
