Toshikatsu Endo “Void–Water Place”

SCAI The Bathhouse
Finished

Artists

Toshikatsu Endo
Ten years on from his previous solo exhibition at SCAI, Endo has created an installation space that brings together a compilation of works and ideas from his “void” series. Central to the installation, stands an excavated a hole in the gallery floor, embedded with a metal box full of water, whilst confronted by an empty coffin-like box fixed to the neighboring wall. With this configuration, the eye of the viewer catches upon the empty wall-hung vessel at the same time as they sense the void opened within the earth. Placed in this position, viewers experience physical feelings that transcend the simple act of seeing, finding themselves drawn into the world of the “void” that Endo presents. Altogether, this new installation makes a powerful appeal to the sensory or sensual element of every human.
