The little known work of 19th century Osaka painters Buzen Sumie and Roen Hayashi is placed under new light in an exhibition disclosing their former popularity as followers of the Chinese style of painting known as Karae. Buzen was a boatman but also pursued work as a painter, together with the practice of making miniature gardens and metalwork. After studying under the ukiyo-e master Settei Tsukioka, his interest turned to Chinese painting, while combining this with scenes of the imagination and the styles of Dutch painting. Roen on the other hand studied under Gokaku Fukuhara, the disciple of literary artist Taiga Ike, with a long term attachment to Chinese style painting, capturing beautifully scenes of birds and flowers in mysterious ink expressions, while also satirizing the customs of the day. Here these artists of the same generation, combined with others working around Osaka and Kyoto at a similar time are reexamined through a collection of 150 works.
