Line and Space: Cy Twombly and East Asia

Hara Museum ARC
Finished

Artists

Cy Twombly, Okyo Maruyama, Tanyu Kano et al.
As the Hara Museum of Contemporary Art opens a retrospective of the painting master Cy Twombly following his 50 year career through a focus upon drawing and monotypes on paper, Hara Museum Arc presents an exhibition comparing the work of Twombly with that of historic pieces from the Rokuro Hara collection in the Kankai Pavilion, acting as a platform for the coming together of East and West. The surfaces of Twombly’s works are danced upon with the sense of improvisation and passion, with fluttering lines, symbolic forms and fragmented words constructing a unique pictorial space. These are here contrasted with the brush strokes of classical eastern art with the fluidity of line and balance of space, bringing about new appreciations of both art forms.
