Jon Sasaki, Hiroaki Morita
The city of Edo evolved to be known as a “river town.” In addition the Nihombashi and Kamejima rivers in the Nihombashi area, there were once several others such as the Sakura and Shinkawa rivers that have since vanished. Soon after the establishment of the Edo shogunate, these rivers were maintained and used as water transportation for merchant ships. Those ships played an important role in bringing not only merchandise but also culture and wealth to the area. Traumatic events such as the Great Kanto Earthquake and WWII brought many changes to rivers, as well as the city. For this exhibition, two artists have collaborated in a project seeking out rivers and shooting documentary videos of underwater cruises with a self-controlled camera. See what happens. Will they find historical objects? What will they discover?
