Seiji Togo
Seiji Togo, who lived in France from 1921 to 1928, brought a Parisian air with him upon his return to Japan. The Paris that Seiji depicted upon wrapping papers for Western confectionery and accessories was fairy tale-like and idealized. By the time he returned to Paris after World War II, in order to participate in the Nika Society international exhibitions, the city had been transformed considerably amid the changes in the economic and international context. This exhibition, comprised of works from the museum’s collection, compares the enchanting images that Seiji developed for his decorations and printed materials, based on the people’s romanticized notions of Paris, and the works that Seiji created and submitted to exhibitions as a painter grappling with the reality of Paris.
