Kazunobu Kano
A two-part exhibition of 40 of the “The 500 Arhats” scrolls, a series of 100 Buddhist paintings by Kazunobu Kano (1816–1863) held in the collection of Zojoji Temple. These works have been much discussed in Japan and America following displays at the Edo-Tokyo Museum immediately after the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011 and the Smithsonian in 2012. In addition to the scrolls themselves, this event observing Kazunobu Kano’s 200th birth anniversary in 2016 presents carefully preserved documents, including diaries and sketches donated to the temple by the artist’s grandson, and a wooden stature of Kazunobu Kano in the “Zojoji Temple Treasures Exhibition Room.”
