Keiko Minami’s copperplate prints combine nostalgia with tinges of solitude. Trees stand in rows birds and young girls linger about, the sky opens up endlessly. The people in these works neither beckon nor refute the viewer. They simply exist. This nonchalance gives peace of mind. Along with around 40 of Minami’s works – early oil paintings as well as copperplate prints – this exhibition presents 15 oil paintings by her long-time friend and fellow artist, Ichi Ogawa.

Minami and Ogawa met during the postwar restoration period, a time when there were still few prominent women artists. Together they spoke of their great hopes and dreams for art. Actively exhibiting in group shows aimed at nurturing female artists, Ogawa attracted attention as a young creator.

Even while living and working in different countries, Minami and Ogawa continued their heartfelt correspondence as artists and friends. Now, for the first time in nearly 25 years they present their works together. Through their own unique methods they tirelessly portrayed their ideals and beliefs, demonstrating their distinctive presences as female artists. Fifteen copperplate prints by Yozo Hamaguchi are also displayed.
