Mikawachi Ware of Nagasaki – High–end Tableware for the Edo, Meiji, and Showa Eras

Shibuya Hikarie 8/ Cube 1, 2, 3
Finished
Mikawachi ware, a type of pottery from Nagasaki Prefecture, got its start in the early Edo period. Also called “Hirado Ware,” these works of delicate porcelain tableware and sculptures taking remarkable forms were created by artisans at the kilns of the ruling Hirado and Matsuura families to meet the discerning tastes of the feudal lords. From the Meiji Restoration through the early Showa era, Mikawachi ware technology was carried on in high-end tableware and cups and saucers for export, earning international acclaim. While Mikawachi ware’s presence has diminished in the postwar era, this exhibition presents some of its most important pieces. From January 20th through January 24th, the next-door Court space will presents a “city” of 1,000 Mikawachi plates with 1,000 different patterns.
