Toba-e, Ponchi, Manga: The Story of Manga From the Edo Through Showa Eras

The Hibiya Library Museum
Finished

Artists

Kuniyoshi Utagawa, Kyosai Kawanabe, Rakuten Kitazawa, Ippei Okamoto et al.
While there are various theories about the origins of Japanese manga, this exhibition focuses on the giga satirical pictures that became a beloved form of mass media in the mid-Edo period (1615–1868), tracing 230 years of Japanese manga history from this time through the early Showa era (1926–1989). Divided into two parts, the exhibition presents a total of around 200 works, including: the pun and humor-filled comic sketches of daily life called toba-e; giga by popular end-Edo Ukiyo-e artists such as Kuniyoshi Utagawa and Kyosai Kawabe; Meiji and Taisho-period artists like Rakuten Kitazawa and Ippei Okamoto; and early-Showa manga magazines and other works from the Kyoto International Manga Museum collection.
