International Association of Art Critics Japanese Section present a symposium which responds to recent incidents in the art world which questions the extent of freedom of expression. This event touches on the incidents surrounding the arrest of artist Rokudenashiko, the policing of Ryudai Takano’s exhibition at the Aichi Prefectural Museum of Art and the request for the removal or change of Makoto Aida’s work shown at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo last year. Under Article 21 of Japan’ Constitution the freedom of speech and the prohibition of censorship are clearly outlined but we are increasingly encountering the occurrence of self censorship within the art world. Here a panel discussion will take place on issues of authoritative power, sponsorship, taboo and self restriction and question how we might protect the freedom of creative expression.
