What is travel? A detachment from everyday life and movement to another land, gaining stimulation from the things encountered and sensing the diversity of the world. In order to recall this surprise and resonance, to tell friends and family travelers record their experiences in a diary, take samples of the objects around them and make pictures of the landscapes and people they come across. As the technology of photography emerged travelers were able to directly capture their new surroundings. With this combined with the development of transport and tourism facilities the very meaning of travel has come to transform. This exhibition reflects upon the changing notion of travel through the ages through painting, printworks, photography and illustrated books.
