The Collection of the Japan Folk Crafts Museum: Kanjiro Kawai and Shikou Munakata Exhibition

Chiba City Museum of Art
Finished

Artists

Kanjiro Kawai, Shikou Munakata
Founder of the Japan Folk Crafts Museum, Soetsu Yanagi, was an advocator of the “Mingei Movement” designed to bring aesthetic appreciation to the crafts and tools of everyday life. Ceramic artist Kanjiro Kawai and print maker Shikou Munakata greatly sympathized with this sentiment and attempted to realize these principles in their work. This exhibition features 240 items of their work selected principally from the collection of the Japan Folk Crafts Museum, initially gathered by Yanagi himself. Even within our contemporary lifestyles we may catch a glance of the beauty and significance of tenderly made craft of the everyday.
