Artists

Matabe Iwasa
2017 marks 380 years since Iwasa Matabe(1578-1650) moved his artistic base to Edo, present day Tokyo. From a young age the artist depicted Japanese and Chinese subjects, but what he focused his attention on throughout his career were paintings inspired by the classic novel “The Tale of Genji.” In this exhibition you will see the challenge that IMatabei and his contemporaries faced in depicting such an epic text, learning from tradition and revel in the fresh and bold approach of these Edo-period works.
