Artists

Masayasu Mitsuke
Masayasu Mitsuke is an artist who paints Kutani ware, a style of Japanese porcelain, and returns to Ota Fine Arts with his first solo exhibition here in 8 years. Drawing on a technique of Aka-e (red enamel painting using iron oxide called Bengala on white porcelains), first established in the Song Dynasty of China and developed in Japan in the Edo period, he creates intricate designs, with patterns which suggest the influence of Japanese tradition, Arabesque forms and even Medieval European descriptions.

This exhibition centers on Mitsuke’s large dishes including new works. His works express a contrast between the white color of the porcelain and Aka-e, as well as the sleekness of gold paint or blue color of enamel as accents. The beauty of Mitsuke’s works is particularly highlighted in large dish that is 50 centimeters in diameter, filled with geometrical patterns across the full surface. Moreover, he has challenged himself to add new motifs in his patterns, with new designs have hardly been shown in the past. This invites us to pursue his future development as well.
