Shiriagari Kotobuki
Shiriagari Kotobuki (b. 1958) is known as a “gag manga” artist for his works with a uniquely humorous and critical eye, such as Yajikita In Deep and the Asahi Shimbun-serialized Chikyu Boei-ke no Hitobito (The Earth Defense Family). Teaching for several years at the Nihon University College of Art and Kobe Design University, he has received the Bungeishunjo Manga Award and the Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize Excellence Award. His recent series Manga After 3.11 about Japan in the wake of the Great East Japan Earthquake has garnered much attention.

His ink paintings, hand-crafted animations, and other works of contemporary art are clearly linked to yet distinct from his manga. A recent installation series involves a variety of revolving objects.

This exhibition, Shiriagari Kotobuki’s first at an art museum, presents works spanning his career while presenting new pieces with a focus on the “revolving” series. From paintings to dioramas to films and objects from daily life, Shiriagari Kotobuki’s full artistic output is surveyed in this exploration the meaning of revolution, the meaning of art, and this off-beat manga artist’s new creative world.
